Yuba City Bug Barometer: July 2026 Pest Activity Report
Welcome to Green Bones Pest Control’s monthly Bug Barometer — your local guide to what’s creeping, crawling, and buzzing around Yuba City and the greater Sacramento Valley right now. July is one of our busiest months, and honestly, it’s not hard to see why. With temperatures regularly pushing into the triple digits and the Feather River nearby keeping humidity levels interesting, we’ve got near-perfect conditions for pest activity across the board.
Owner Matt has been tackling Sacramento Valley pest problems for over 25 years, and he’ll tell you — July always keeps the Green Bones crew hopping. Here’s your complete breakdown of what we’re seeing in the field this month.
July 2026 Pest Activity Levels
🐜 Ants — Activity Level: HIGH
No surprise here. Ants are absolutely the number-one call we’re getting right now. The extreme summer heat drives ant colonies deep underground and — more importantly — right into your home in search of cool air, moisture, and food. Argentine ants and pavement ants are particularly active throughout Yuba City neighborhoods this month.
- Seal cracks around windows, doors, and your foundation with caulk
- Keep kitchen counters wiped down and store food in airtight containers
- Fix any leaky pipes or faucets — ants are hunting for water as much as food
- Trim back trees and shrubs that touch your home’s exterior walls
🕷️ Spiders — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Spider activity picks up in July as their prey (other insects) becomes more abundant. We’re seeing an uptick in black widow sightings in garages, woodpiles, and storage sheds across Yuba County. Western black widows love cluttered, undisturbed spots — exactly the kind of places we stop checking in the summer heat.
- Shake out shoes, gloves, and gardening gear before putting them on
- Wear gloves when moving firewood or digging through storage boxes
- Reduce clutter in garages, sheds, and crawl spaces
- Knock down webs regularly around the exterior of your home
🦟 Mosquitoes — Activity Level: HIGH
Between the irrigation canals, rice fields, and the Feather and Yuba Rivers, Yuba County is prime mosquito territory all summer long. July’s heat accelerates the mosquito life cycle, meaning populations rebuild fast. Standing water anywhere on your property — even a bottle cap full — is enough for breeding.
- Dump and refresh birdbaths, pet water bowls, and plant saucers at least twice a week
- Check gutters for clogs that hold standing water
- Use EPA-registered repellents containing DEET when spending time outside
- Make sure window and door screens are in good repair
🐭 Rodents — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Roof rats and house mice don’t take the summer off. In July, the heat actually pushes rodents to seek cooler shelter — which can mean your attic, walls, or crawl space. We’re also seeing increased activity in areas near agricultural fields as summer harvest approaches and rodents get displaced.
- Inspect your roofline, vents, and eaves for gaps larger than a quarter
- Keep garage doors closed and don’t leave pet food out overnight
- Store firewood and compost bins away from the house
- Look for droppings, gnaw marks, or grease tracks along walls
🐝 Wasps & Yellow Jackets — Activity Level: HIGH
Wasp colonies have been building since spring and are now hitting their peak summer population. Yellow jackets are especially aggressive this time of year as their nests mature. We’re finding nests in eaves, attic vents, fence posts, and even underground in yards across the Yuba City area. Don’t poke it — call us.
- Check your roofline and eaves monthly for new nest construction
- Keep trash cans tightly sealed, especially during outdoor meals
- Avoid sweet-smelling perfumes or lotions when working outside
- Never attempt to remove an established nest yourself
🪲 Termites — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Subterranean termite swarmers are past their spring peak, but July’s warm soil temperatures keep worker termites extremely active underground. If you see mud tubes along your foundation or notice soft, hollow-sounding wood, don’t wait — termite damage adds up fast and quietly.
- Eliminate wood-to-soil contact around your foundation and deck
- Fix moisture problems like leaky sprinklers near the house
- Schedule an annual termite inspection if you haven’t had one recently
- Store lumber and firewood off the ground and away from your home
