Current Pest Activity Levels – April 2026
Ants – HIGH Activity
April brings peak ant season to the Sacramento Valley. Argentine ants, pavement ants, and carpenter ants are all extremely active right now. The recent warm weather combined with spring rains has created perfect conditions for colony expansion. We’re seeing significant increases in kitchen invasions and outdoor activity around Yuba City homes.
Prevention Tips:
- Clean up food crumbs immediately, especially in kitchens and dining areas
- Store food in airtight containers
- Wipe down counters with vinegar solution daily
- Seal entry points around windows, doors, and utility lines
- Keep outdoor eating areas clean after barbecues and gatherings
Spiders – MEDIUM Activity
Common house spiders and black widows are moderately active this month. While not at peak levels yet, we’re starting to see more web-building activity in garages, sheds, and outdoor structures throughout Yuba County. The cooler evening temperatures are driving them to seek shelter indoors.
Prevention Tips:
- Reduce clutter in storage areas and basements
- Vacuum regularly in corners and behind furniture
- Check and shake out stored clothing and shoes
- Install door sweeps and repair damaged screens
- Keep outdoor lighting away from entry points
Mosquitoes – MEDIUM Activity
Early mosquito activity is ramping up across the Sacramento Valley. Standing water from recent rains has created breeding opportunities, but we haven’t hit the intense summer levels yet. Culex and Aedes species are the main concerns for Yuba City residents right now.
Prevention Tips:
- Empty standing water from plant saucers, buckets, and toys weekly
- Clean out gutters and ensure proper drainage
- Maintain swimming pools and water features properly
- Install or repair window and door screens
- Use fans on patios and outdoor seating areas
Rodents – LOW Activity
Mouse and rat activity is currently at seasonal lows throughout Northern California. The warmer weather means rodents are spending more time outdoors and less time seeking indoor shelter. However, this is an excellent time for prevention work before activity increases again next fall.
Prevention Tips:
- Seal holes and gaps larger than a dime with steel wool and caulk
- Store pet food and birdseed in metal containers
- Trim vegetation away from your home’s exterior
- Remove outdoor food sources and fallen fruit
- Inspect attics and crawl spaces for entry points
Wasps – MEDIUM Activity
Paper wasps and yellowjackets are beginning their spring buildup phase. Queens are emerging from winter hiding spots and starting new colonies. We’re seeing increased activity around eaves, sheds, and outdoor structures in the Yuba City area.
Prevention Tips:
- Inspect eaves and overhangs monthly for new nest construction
- Keep outdoor garbage cans tightly sealed
- Avoid wearing bright colors and floral patterns outdoors
- Check children’s play equipment regularly
- Consider professional nest removal for established colonies
Termites – HIGH Activity
Subterranean termites are extremely active this April in the Sacramento Valley. Swarming season is in full swing, and we’re responding to numerous calls about winged termites around Yuba County homes. The combination of moisture and warming soil temperatures has triggered peak activity.
Prevention Tips:
- Fix moisture problems and leaky plumbing immediately
- Keep mulch and wood debris away from your foundation
- Ensure proper ventilation in crawl spaces
- Store firewood away from your home
- Schedule annual termite inspections with professionals
