Yuba County Pest Report – May 8, 2026

What’s Active Now

This week’s warm afternoons and cool mornings have kicked Central Valley pest activity into high gear across Yuba County. Here’s what I’m seeing in service calls from Marysville to Live Oak.

Argentine Ants are absolutely exploding right now. These persistent invaders are expanding their supercolonies as soil temperatures hit that sweet spot around 70°F. I’m getting multiple calls daily from Olivehurst and Linda about kitchen invasions. Unlike our native ants, Argentines don’t fight each other – they just keep growing massive interconnected colonies that can stretch for miles.

Ant Nuptial Flights started this week with Tuesday’s perfect conditions. Those winged ants you’re seeing aren’t termites – they’re reproductive ants taking their mating flights. The rice field areas near Gridley are seeing particularly heavy activity as moisture from early irrigation creates ideal launch conditions.

Subterranean Termites are swarming throughout our area. The recent soil moisture from April’s rains, combined with warming temps, has triggered major swarm events. Properties near the Yuba and Feather Rivers are especially active zones right now. These swarms typically peak between 10 AM and 2 PM on warm, still days.

Earwigs are moving into irrigated areas as homeowners fire up their sprinkler systems. These moisture-loving pests are congregating around drip lines and garden borders, especially in established neighborhoods like Wheatland where mature landscaping provides perfect hiding spots.

Culex Mosquitoes are emerging from winter breeding sites. Our rice field proximity means we get hit early and hard. Standing water from overwatering lawns and clogged gutters is already producing the first generation of these persistent biters.

Prevention Tips

  • Eliminate ant food sources by cleaning up pet food, fixing sticky spills immediately, and storing pantry items in sealed containers
  • Remove standing water sources – check gutters, plant saucers, and low spots in yards where water collects
  • Create dry zones around your home’s foundation by fixing irrigation leaks and ensuring proper drainage away from structures
  • Seal entry points now before summer heat drives more pests indoors – focus on gaps around pipes, utility lines, and door frames

Seasonal Outlook

Expect ant activity to intensify through the end of May as colonies reach peak expansion mode. Termite swarms should taper off by Memorial Day, but damage inspections become critical after swarm season. Mosquito pressure will ramp up significantly once rice flooding begins in earnest – typically late May into June in our area.

When to Call a Pro

Call immediately if you see termite swarms inside your home, discover ant trails that return within hours of cleaning, or notice earwig populations that don’t respond to habitat modification. Large-scale infestations require professional intervention before they become entrenched.
