Yuba City Bug Barometer: May 2026 Pest Activity Report

Welcome to Green Bones Pest Control’s monthly Bug Barometer for Yuba City and the greater Sacramento Valley! As your local pest control experts since 2012, we’re tracking pest activity levels throughout Northern California to help you stay ahead of unwanted visitors.

May brings warmer temperatures and increased pest activity across Yuba County. Here’s what we’re seeing in the field right now and how you can protect your property.

Current Pest Activity Levels

Ants – HIGH Activity

Argentine ants and pavement ants are in full swing this month. The recent warm weather has triggered heavy foraging activity, and we’re responding to multiple calls daily across Yuba City neighborhoods. These persistent invaders are actively seeking food and water sources as their colonies expand.

Prevention Tips:

  • Wipe down counters and sweep floors daily to eliminate crumbs
  • Store food in airtight containers, especially pet food
  • Fix leaky faucets and eliminate standing water
  • Seal cracks around windows, doors, and foundation areas
  • Trim vegetation away from your home’s exterior

Mosquitoes – HIGH Activity

With Sacramento Valley’s irrigation channels and recent spring rains, mosquito populations are exploding. Aedes and Culex species are particularly active during dawn and dusk hours. The warm, humid conditions are perfect for breeding.

Prevention Tips:

  • Empty any containers holding standing water weekly
  • Clean gutters to prevent water accumulation
  • Maintain swimming pools with proper chlorination
  • Install or repair window and door screens
  • Use fans on patios – mosquitoes are weak fliers

Wasps – MEDIUM Activity

Paper wasps and yellow jackets are beginning their nest-building season. We’re seeing increased activity around eaves, sheds, and outdoor structures throughout Yuba County. Activity will continue ramping up through summer months.

Prevention Tips:

  • Inspect eaves, sheds, and outdoor furniture for early nests
  • Keep garbage cans tightly sealed
  • Avoid wearing bright colors or floral patterns outdoors
  • Remove fallen fruit from trees promptly
  • Don’t attempt DIY nest removal – call professionals

Spiders – MEDIUM Activity

Black widows and common house spiders are becoming more active as temperatures rise. We’re finding them in garages, sheds, and outdoor storage areas across the Sacramento Valley. Most are beneficial, but some species pose risks.

Prevention Tips:

  • Vacuum regularly in corners and under furniture
  • Reduce clutter in basements, garages, and storage areas
  • Seal gaps around doors and windows
  • Shake out shoes and clothing stored in dark areas
  • Install door sweeps and weather stripping

Rodents – LOW Activity

Mice and rat activity is relatively low this month as outdoor food sources become abundant. However, they’re still present and will seek shelter during Northern California’s hot summer days ahead.

Termites – LOW Activity

Subterranean termite activity remains low following their spring swarming season. However, this is actually the perfect time for inspections and prevention, as any new colonies are still establishing themselves.

Weather Impact on Pest Activity

May’s warming trend in the Sacramento Valley creates ideal conditions for pest reproduction and activity. The combination of moderate temperatures (70s-80s) and available moisture from irrigation systems provides perfect breeding conditions for many species.

As temperatures continue climbing toward summer, we expect mosquito and ant activity to remain high, while wasp populations will increase significantly. Early intervention is key to preventing major infestations.

What This Means for Yuba City Homeowners

With HIGH activity levels for ants and mosquitoes, now is the time to implement prevention strategies. These pests can quickly establish themselves and become difficult to control without professional intervention.
