Yuba City Bug Barometer: May 2026 Pest Activity Report
Welcome to Green Bones Pest Control’s monthly Bug Barometer — your local guide to what’s crawling, flying, and nesting around Yuba City and the greater Sacramento Valley right now. As we roll into May 2026, the Sacramento Valley is doing what it does best: warming up fast, bringing out the bugs right along with the wildflowers. Matt and the Green Bones crew have been seeing some serious pest activity across Yuba County this month, so we figured it was time to give our neighbors a straight-up rundown of what to watch for.
Think of this as your monthly pest weather report. We rate each pest’s current activity level — HIGH, MEDIUM, or LOW — and give you practical tips to keep them out of your home and yard.
May 2026 Pest Activity Ratings
🐜 Ants — Activity Level: HIGH
No surprise here. May is prime time for ant activity in Yuba City, and this year is no exception. As soil temperatures climb and last winter’s moisture starts to dry out, ant colonies are on the move searching for food and water. Argentine ants and pavement ants are especially active right now, and we’re getting calls daily about kitchen invasions and trails along exterior walls.
- Seal gaps around windows, doors, and utility lines entering your home
- Keep pet food bowls from sitting out overnight
- Store pantry items in airtight containers
- Fix any dripping faucets or moisture issues under sinks — ants are thirsty this time of year
- Keep tree branches and shrubs trimmed back from the roofline
🕷️ Spiders — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Spider activity is picking up as their prey insects become more abundant. We’re seeing more black widows turning up in garages, woodpiles, and sheds across Yuba County. Western spotted orb weavers are also starting to set up shop around porch lights and eaves. Not dangerous to your home, but definitely not a welcome houseguest.
- Shake out shoes, gloves, and clothing left in the garage before putting them on
- Wear gloves when moving firewood or working in storage areas
- Reduce outdoor lighting that attracts the insects spiders feed on
- Declutter storage areas where spiders love to hide
🦟 Mosquitoes — Activity Level: HIGH
With standing water still lingering from spring rains and irrigation season kicking into gear throughout the Sacramento Valley, mosquitoes are breeding aggressively right now. The Feather River corridor and low-lying areas around Yuba City are particularly active zones. Protect yourself and your family before evening outdoor time becomes miserable.
- Dump and refresh any standing water in pots, bird baths, buckets, or tarps every 3–4 days
- Clean out clogged gutters that hold moisture
- Use fans on patios — mosquitoes are weak fliers
- Repair any torn window or door screens
🐭 Rodents — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Rodent pressure is moderate this month. As temperatures rise, roof rats and house mice that sheltered in homes over winter begin venturing out more — but they’re also breeding, which means populations can spike fast. We’re also seeing increased ground squirrel activity in yards bordering open fields and orchards, which is very typical for this part of Northern California.
- Inspect your roofline, eaves, and crawl space vents for entry points
- Keep garage doors closed when not in use
- Store birdseed and pet food in sealed metal containers
- Stack firewood at least 18 inches off the ground and away from the house
🐝 Wasps — Activity Level: HIGH
Yellow jackets and paper wasps are in full nest-building mode right now, and May is honestly the best time to catch and treat nests before colonies explode in size. We’re finding nests under eaves, in attic vents, in play structures, and underground. Don’t wait on this one — a nest that’s manageable today can be a serious hazard by July.
- Inspect eaves, soffits, and porch ceilings weekly throughout May and June
- Cover outdoor trash cans with tight-fitting lids
- Never swat at a wasp near a nest — it triggers an aggressive response
- Call a professional for any nest larger than a golf ball
🪲 Termites — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Subterranean termite swarmers have been spotted in several Yuba City neighborhoods this spring. Swarm season typically peaks between March and May in the Sacramento Valley, meaning now is a smart time to schedule a termite inspection if you haven’t had one recently. Don’t let the quiet fool you — termite damage happens silently and slowly until it’s very expensive.
- Keep mulch, soil, and wood debris away from your foundation
- Fix any wood-to-soil contact around your home’s exterior
- Address any moisture problems in crawl spaces or basements
- Schedule a professional inspection — termite activity isn’t always visible to the untrained eye
Bottom Line for Yuba City Homeowners This May
It’s a busy month out there. Ants, mosquitoes, and wasps are all running HOT right now, and termite season is still very much in play. The good news? Early action makes a huge difference. A little prevention now saves you a lot of headache — and money — later in the season.
