What Locals Should Know
Two pests are making headlines in our service calls this week: boxelder bugs and Norway rats. The connection to the Olivehurst area isn’t coincidental. Boxelder trees are scattered throughout older neighborhoods off Olivehurst Avenue and along the greenbelt corridors near the levee edges — and right now, with temperatures dipping into the low 60s at night, boxelder bugs are aggregating in enormous numbers on south- and west-facing walls, fences, and tree trunks. They’re not destructive inside your home, but thousands of them attempting to overwinter in wall voids is not a situation you want to ignore.
Simultaneously, Norway rats are beginning their annual indoor migration. Dried crop fields near Linda and the eastern Olivehurst ag-boundary are losing the ground cover rats have sheltered in all summer. With food sources consolidating and nights cooling, these rats are scouting foundations, garage gaps, and crawl spaces aggressively. Yuba County’s older housing stock — particularly homes built in the 1950s and 60s in Olivehurst — often has foundation gaps and deteriorating crawl space vents that rats exploit quickly.
Practical Tips
- Seal your structure now, not later. Walk your foundation perimeter and look for gaps wider than a quarter inch. Steel wool packed into gaps, followed by caulk, is an effective first layer against Norway rats.
- Don’t vacuum boxelder bugs indoors. Crushing them releases a pungent odor and stains surfaces. Sweep them into soapy water outdoors instead.
- Check your crawl space vents. Broken or missing vent screens are an open invitation. Replace damaged hardware cloth before rats establish a runway inside.
- Reduce harborage around the home’s exterior. Woodpiles, debris, and overgrown shrubs within three feet of the house give both boxelder bugs and rats staging areas. Clear them out this weekend.
When to Call a Pro
If boxelder bugs are appearing inside your walls or clustering at window frames indoors, that colony is already establishing an overwintering site and a topical spray won’t solve it.
