Yuba City Bug Barometer: June 2026
Welcome to Green Bones Pest Control’s monthly Bug Barometer — your local guide to what’s creeping, crawling, and buzzing around Yuba City and the greater Sacramento Valley right now. June is one of our busiest months, and honestly, it’s not hard to see why. Temperatures are climbing fast, irrigation season is in full swing, and pest populations that spent the spring building up are now hitting their peak. Here’s exactly what Matt and the Green Bones crew are seeing out in the field this month.
🌡️ June 2026 Activity Report
🐜 Ants — Activity Level: HIGH
No surprise here — ants are absolutely surging in Yuba City right now. Argentine ants and pavement ants are the biggest culprits this month. As outdoor soil dries out with the summer heat, colonies push toward homes looking for water and food. We’re getting calls every single day about ant trails in kitchens, bathrooms, and around exterior foundations.
- Seal cracks around windows, doors, and your foundation with caulk
- Fix any leaky faucets or pipes — ants are after that moisture
- Keep countertops wiped clean and store food in airtight containers
- Trim back shrubs and trees that touch your home’s exterior
🕷️ Spiders — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Spider activity is picking up noticeably in June. Western black widows are the biggest concern in our area — they love dry, undisturbed spots like garages, woodpiles, and storage sheds. As temperatures rise, spiders are hunting the insects that are also spiking this time of year. Activity will continue climbing through July and August.
- Shake out shoes, gloves, and stored clothing before putting them on
- Keep woodpiles stored away from the house and elevated off the ground
- Declutter garages and storage areas to eliminate hiding spots
- Install door sweeps and check window screens for tears
🦟 Mosquitoes — Activity Level: HIGH
With the Feather River, local rice fields, and irrigation ditches all in full swing, Yuba County is prime mosquito territory in June. Standing water is everywhere right now, and the warm nights are making outdoor time pretty miserable in some neighborhoods. We’re also keeping an eye on West Nile Virus activity — Sutter and Yuba counties have historically been hotspots.
- Dump standing water from pots, birdbaths, buckets, and tarps weekly
- Make sure gutters are draining properly and not holding water
- Use mosquito dunks in ornamental ponds or standing water you can’t drain
- Run outdoor fans on patios — mosquitoes are weak fliers
🐭 Rodents — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Roof rats and house mice don’t take summers off — not in Northern California. June brings increased rodent movement as agricultural activity ramps up around Yuba City. Harvest-adjacent neighborhoods and homes near open fields tend to see the most pressure. We’re also starting to get calls about ground squirrels causing damage to lawns and landscaping.
- Inspect your roofline, vents, and eaves for any gaps larger than a quarter
- Don’t leave pet food outside overnight
- Keep garage doors closed when not in use
- Store firewood and debris piles away from the home’s perimeter
🐝 Wasps & Yellow Jackets — Activity Level: HIGH
Wasp season is officially here. Paper wasps and yellow jackets are building nests fast right now, and queens that started colonies in spring now have large, defensive worker populations. We’re finding nests under eaves, in wall voids, inside BBQ grills, and in ground burrows. Don’t try to knock these down yourself — an agitated colony is no joke.
- Inspect your roofline and eaves monthly for early-stage nest formation
- Keep trash cans tightly lidded — yellow jackets love sweet garbage
- Avoid leaving sugary drinks or food uncovered outdoors
- If you find an active nest, call a professional — seriously
🪵 Termites — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Western drywood termites and subterranean termites are both active this month. Swarmers (the winged reproductives) have largely finished their spring flight, but the colonies they’ve started are quietly getting to work. June is a great time to schedule a termite inspection before any damage gets a head start on you.
- Remove wood debris, old stumps, and scrap lumber from around your property
- Fix moisture problems — leaky pipes and poor drainage attract subterranean termites
- Check wooden window frames, door frames, and fascia boards for soft spots
- Schedule an annual termite inspection if you haven’t had one recently
