May Pests Active in Yuba City & Marysville CA

May Pest Activity in Yuba City, Marysville & the Sacramento Valley

May is one of the busiest months we see here at Green Bones Pest Control — and honestly, it makes total sense when you think about what’s happening outside right now. Temperatures across the Sacramento Valley are climbing into the 80s and pushing toward 90°F on the warmer days. We’ve moved past most of our spring rainfall, the ground is starting to dry out, and agricultural activity is ramping up fast across Sutter and Yuba counties. Rice fields are being flooded, orchards are in full swing, and all of that environmental change pushes pests toward one place — your home.

After more than 25 years in the pest control business and over a decade serving families right here in Yuba City, Marysville, Wheatland, Live Oak, and Gridley, owner Matt has seen this pattern play out every single spring. Here’s what’s active right now and what you can do about it.

The Big 5 Pests to Watch for This May

1. Ants — Especially Odorous House Ants and Argentine Ants

May is peak ant season in the Sacramento Valley, full stop. As the soil dries out after our spring rains, ant colonies get crowded and start looking for moisture and food sources — which often means your kitchen, bathrooms, and anywhere there’s a water leak. Argentine ants are particularly aggressive this time of year and are incredibly common throughout Yuba City and Marysville neighborhoods.

Watch for:

  • Trails of small ants along baseboards, countertops, or window sills
  • Ant activity near pet food bowls or fruit left on the counter
  • Entry points around door frames, utility pipes, and gaps in stucco

Prevention tip: Wipe down kitchen surfaces regularly, seal any gaps around plumbing, and trim back shrubs and trees that touch your home’s exterior. Ants love using those as highways.

2. Subterranean Termites — Swarm Season Is Here

If you’ve noticed what looks like flying ants around your home lately, look closer. May is prime swarming season for subterranean termites across Northern California. Swarmers emerge when temperatures hit that warm sweet spot — usually after a rain event followed by sunny days — exactly the conditions we’ve had this spring.

The scary thing about termites is that by the time you see swarmers, a colony has often been active underground for years. Homes in older neighborhoods of Marysville and Yuba City, as well as rural properties out toward Gridley and Live Oak, are especially vulnerable.

Watch for discarded wings near windowsills or doorways, mud tubes along your foundation, or any soft or hollow-sounding wood. Don’t wait on this one.

3. Spiders — Black Widows Are Moving Indoors

Black widows thrive in our hot, dry Sacramento Valley climate, and May is when they really start showing up in garages, sheds, and the corners of outdoor furniture. As temperatures spike and their outdoor prey becomes more active, so do they. We get calls about black widows regularly from homeowners in Wheatland and the more rural stretches between Yuba City and Gridley.

Check dark corners of your garage, under patio furniture, inside boxes you haven’t moved in a while, and around your water meter or sprinkler valves. Wear gloves when gardening this time of year — seriously.

4. Mosquitoes — Rice Fields and Standing Water

Here’s something unique to our little corner of California: the Sacramento Valley’s rice farming season begins in May, and the flooding of those fields creates enormous mosquito breeding habitat. Residents in Yuba City, Live Oak, and Gridley who live near agricultural land know exactly what we’re talking about. Add in any standing water in your yard — clogged gutters, bird baths, low spots in the lawn — and you’ve got a real problem.

Dump and refresh any standing water at least once a week. Even a bottle cap holds enough water to breed mosquitoes in warm weather.

5. Rodents — Rats and Mice Migrating from Fields

As farming activity picks up and fields get cleared, tilled, and planted, rodents that were living in agricultural areas start migrating. Yuba City and Marysville homeowners near orchards or open fields often notice a spike in rat and mouse activity in May and June. They’re looking for shelter, food, and water — and your home is a five-star hotel compared to a dry field.

Seal gaps around your foundation, check under sinks for gnaw marks, and make sure your garage door seals properly all the way to the ground.

Don’t Wait Until It’s a Full-Blown Infestation

The smartest thing you can do this May is get ahead of these pests before they establish themselves. A quick inspection now can save you significant time, stress, and money later in the summer. Whether you’re in Yuba City, Marysville, or out in Wheatland, Live Oak, or Gridley, our team knows the local pest pressures specific to this valley.
