Yuba City Bug Barometer: May 2026 Pest Activity Report
Welcome to Green Bones Pest Control’s monthly Bug Barometer — your local guide to what’s crawling, flying, and nesting around Yuba City and the greater Sacramento Valley right now. May is one of our busiest months of the year, and honestly, it’s not hard to see why. After a wet winter and a warm spring, the bugs are absolutely ready to party. Here’s what Matt and the team are seeing out in the field this month.
🐜 Ants — Activity Level: HIGH
No surprise here. Ants are the number-one call we’re getting right now across Yuba City, Marysville, and surrounding areas. As temperatures climb into the 80s and 90s, ant colonies are expanding fast and foraging hard — especially Argentine ants and pavement ants looking for water and food sources inside your home.
Prevention Tips for Ants
- Wipe down counters and sweep floors daily to eliminate food crumbs and residue
- Seal cracks around windows, doors, and your home’s foundation
- Fix leaky faucets and eliminate standing water near the house
- Keep firewood and mulch piles away from the structure
- Store pantry foods in airtight containers
🕷️ Spiders — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Spider activity is picking up noticeably this month. We’re seeing increased Western black widow activity in garages, sheds, and along block walls — which is pretty typical for May in Northern California. Common house spiders and orb weavers are also starting to show up around porch lights and window frames as insect populations rise (more bugs = more spiders hunting them).
Prevention Tips for Spiders
- Shake out shoes, gloves, and stored clothing before putting them on
- Reduce clutter in garages, sheds, and storage areas
- Knock down webs regularly around eaves and corners
- Reduce exterior lighting or switch to yellow “bug lights” to attract fewer insects
- Seal gaps around garage doors and utility penetrations
🦟 Mosquitoes — Activity Level: HIGH
With the extra rainfall we saw earlier this year, standing water is still hanging around in low-lying areas throughout Yuba County. Mosquito activity is surging right on schedule, and the Sutter-Yuba Mosquito & Vector Control District has already been busy. That said, your own yard can be a big contributor to the problem.
Prevention Tips for Mosquitoes
- Empty any standing water weekly — bird baths, saucers, buckets, and clogged gutters
- Change pet water bowls every couple of days
- Use mosquito dunks (BTi) in ornamental ponds or water features
- Keep grass and shrubs trimmed — mosquitoes rest in dense vegetation during the day
- Repair window and door screens with any tears or gaps
🐀 Rodents — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Rodent pressure eases up a bit in May compared to the winter months, but don’t let your guard down. We’re still finding roof rat activity in attics and finding evidence of ground squirrels and gophers in yards across the valley. Young rodents born over the winter are now out exploring, which means new entry points can pop up unexpectedly.
Prevention Tips for Rodents
- Inspect your roofline, eaves, and vents for gaps — roof rats can squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter
- Keep fruit trees harvested and fallen fruit cleaned up promptly
- Store birdseed and pet food in sealed, hard-sided containers
- Keep a tidy garage and eliminate harborage areas like old appliances and piles of debris
🐝 Wasps — Activity Level: HIGH
Yellow jackets and paper wasps are in full nest-building mode right now. May is actually the ideal time to treat wasp nests because colonies are still small and manageable. By August, those same nests can hold hundreds of aggressive wasps. Don’t wait — if you’re seeing wasps investigating your eaves, fence posts, or ground areas, call us now.
Prevention Tips for Wasps
- Inspect eaves, porch ceilings, and window frames weekly for early-stage nests
- Seal openings in siding, fascia boards, and around utility penetrations
- Keep trash cans tightly lidded, especially if they contain food waste
- Avoid leaving sugary drinks or food uncovered outdoors
🪲 Termites — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Subterranean termite swarm season in the Sacramento Valley typically peaks from March through May, and we’re still catching the tail end of it. If you’ve noticed winged termites (swarmers) around your windows or found discarded wings near your foundation, that’s a serious red flag. Western drywood termites will start becoming more active as temperatures rise further through summer.
Prevention Tips for Termites
- Eliminate wood-to-soil contact around your home’s foundation
- Fix moisture issues — leaky pipes and poor drainage attract subterranean termites
- Store lumber, firewood, and wood debris away from your structure
- Schedule a professional termite inspection if you haven’t had one in the past year
Stay Ahead of the Bugs This May
The Sacramento Valley’s warm climate is a beautiful thing — but it does mean we share our space with a pretty active insect and rodent population year-round. The good news is that early action always beats a full-blown infestation. Whether you’re dealing with a trail of ants in the kitchen, a wasp nest under the eaves, or you just want a seasonal perimeter treatment to get ahead of things, the Green Bones team is ready to help.
