Yuba City Bug Barometer: June 2026 Pest Activity Report
Welcome to Green Bones Pest Control’s monthly Bug Barometer — your local guide to what’s crawling, flying, and tunneling around Yuba City and the greater Sacramento Valley right now. June is one of our busiest months of the year, and honestly, it’s not hard to see why. Temperatures are climbing into the triple digits, our dry season is kicking in hard, and pests of every variety are doing exactly what pests do best — making themselves at home.
Our owner Matt has been reading the rhythms of Northern California pest activity for over 25 years, and June 2026 is shaping up to be a particularly active season. Here’s your complete breakdown of what we’re seeing out in the field right now.
🐜 Ants — Activity Level: HIGH
No surprise here. Ant activity in June is about as Yuba City as triple-digit heat and a bag of Sutter Buttes pistachios. Argentine ants and pavement ants are the big offenders right now, and they’re marching indoors in droves looking for water and food as the ground outside dries out fast.
Prevention Tips
- Seal gaps around windows, doors, and utility entry points with caulk.
- Fix leaky faucets and eliminate standing water near your foundation.
- Store all food — including pet food — in airtight containers.
- Keep tree branches and shrubs trimmed back from your roofline and exterior walls.
🕷️ Spiders — Activity Level: HIGH
June brings an uptick in spider sightings across Yuba County, and we’re seeing plenty of Western black widows turning up in garages, woodpiles, and sheds. Where ant and insect populations surge, spider populations follow — they go where the food is. Most spiders are harmless, but black widows are a genuine concern for families and pets.
Prevention Tips
- Shake out shoes, gloves, and stored clothing before putting them on.
- Wear gloves when moving woodpiles or digging in the garden.
- Reduce clutter in garages and storage areas where spiders love to hide.
- Install tight-fitting door sweeps and repair any damaged window screens.
🦟 Mosquitoes — Activity Level: HIGH
With irrigation canals, rice fields, and the Feather River all within close range, Yuba City is prime mosquito territory in June. Evening outdoor gatherings are getting hit hard right now. Mosquito pressure typically peaks mid-June through July, so now is the time to get ahead of it.
Prevention Tips
- Dump and refresh any standing water in bird baths, flowerpots, and gutters weekly.
- Use mosquito dunks in ornamental ponds or water features.
- Wear long sleeves and EPA-registered repellent during dawn and dusk hours.
- Make sure all window and door screens are intact and properly fitted.
🐀 Rodents — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Rodent pressure dips slightly compared to the winter months, but don’t count mice and roof rats out just yet. As grain harvests approach and agricultural activity picks up around Sutter and Yuba counties, rodent movement around rural properties and neighborhoods near fields stays consistent. We’re still getting plenty of calls.
Prevention Tips
- Inspect your foundation and roofline for any gaps larger than a quarter-inch.
- Keep firewood stacked away from the house and elevated off the ground.
- Secure garbage cans with locking lids and don’t leave pet food outside overnight.
🐝 Wasps — Activity Level: HIGH
Paper wasps and yellow jackets are building colonies fast right now. June is when those nests go from manageable to genuinely dangerous in a matter of weeks. We’ve been finding active nests under eaves, in attic vents, and inside outdoor furniture at a high rate this month. Do not attempt to remove an established nest on your own.
Prevention Tips
- Inspect your eaves, porch ceilings, and fence posts early in the morning for new nest activity.
- Seal openings in siding, soffits, and vents to prevent nesting entry points.
- Keep sugary drinks covered during outdoor meals — yellow jackets love them.
🪲 Termites — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Subterranean termite swarms peaked back in April and May, but we’re still finding active infestations that got started during that swarm season. Western drywood termites become more active as summer heat sets in. If you haven’t had an inspection this year, June is still a smart time to schedule one.
Prevention Tips
- Eliminate wood-to-soil contact around your foundation and garden beds.
- Fix any moisture issues like leaky pipes or poor drainage near your home’s perimeter.
- Schedule an annual professional termite inspection — early detection saves thousands.
