Yuba City Bug Barometer: June 2026 Pest Activity Report

Welcome to the June 2026 edition of the Green Bones Pest Control Bug Barometer — your monthly snapshot of what’s creeping, crawling, and buzzing around Yuba City and the greater Sacramento Valley right now. After a mild spring with decent rainfall, we’re heading into what looks like a hot, dry Northern California summer. That means pest pressure is ramping up fast across Yuba County, and knowing what to watch for can save you a serious headache down the road.

Let’s break it down pest by pest.

🐜 Ants — Activity Level: HIGH

No surprise here. June is prime time for ant activity in Yuba City, and this year is no exception. As temperatures climb into the 90s and soil moisture drops, ants go on a serious hunt for water and food — and your kitchen looks like a five-star resort to them. We’re seeing heavy activity from Argentine ants and pavement ants throughout Yuba County right now.

Prevention Tips

  • Wipe down countertops and sweep floors daily — even small crumbs are a dinner invitation.
  • Store food in sealed containers, including pet food.
  • Fix any leaky faucets or pipes; ants are just as interested in moisture as they are in food.
  • Seal gaps around windows, doors, and utility penetrations with caulk.
  • Keep firewood and debris piles away from your home’s foundation.

🕷️ Spiders — Activity Level: MEDIUM

Spider activity is picking up as their prey (other insects) becomes more abundant. We typically see a significant spike in spider populations here in the Sacramento Valley between June and September. Western black widows are the primary concern in our area — they love wood piles, garage corners, and cluttered sheds. Keep an eye out, especially if you have kids or pets spending more time outside this summer.

Prevention Tips

  • Shake out shoes, gloves, and garden equipment before putting them on.
  • Reduce clutter in garages, sheds, and storage areas.
  • Install door sweeps and repair torn window screens.
  • Knock down webs regularly around entry points and eaves.

🦟 Mosquitoes — Activity Level: HIGH

With standing water still lingering from spring irrigation and the rice fields active in the Sutter and Yuba County area, mosquito populations are booming right now. June through August is peak mosquito season in the Sacramento Valley, and this year the warm nights are keeping them active well into the evening hours. West Nile Virus remains a concern in our region, so don’t take mosquitoes lightly.

Prevention Tips

  • Eliminate standing water around your property — flower pots, bird baths, clogged gutters, tarps, even bottle caps collect enough water to breed mosquitoes.
  • Change bird bath water at least twice a week.
  • Use EPA-approved repellent when spending time outdoors at dawn and dusk.
  • Make sure all window and door screens are intact and properly fitted.

🐀 Rodents — Activity Level: MEDIUM

Roof rats and house mice don’t take a summer vacation. While activity tends to spike more in fall when temps drop, June is when rodents start scouting your property for entry points before the heat gets extreme. We’re seeing consistent rodent activity in older neighborhoods around central Yuba City and in rural properties near agricultural land.

Prevention Tips

  • Inspect your roofline, eaves, and foundation for gaps larger than a quarter-inch.
  • Keep garage doors closed as much as possible.
  • Trim tree branches that overhang your roof — roof rats use them as highways.
  • Store birdseed and pet food in hard-sided, sealed containers.

🐝 Wasps & Yellow Jackets — Activity Level: HIGH

Wasp colonies have been building since spring and are now entering their most aggressive growth phase. Yellow jackets and paper wasps are showing up under eaves, in wall voids, and in the ground throughout Yuba City right now. By August, colonies can reach several thousand individuals — so catching them early in June is key.

Prevention Tips

  • Inspect eaves, overhangs, and soffits monthly for early nest development.
  • Keep outdoor trash cans tightly sealed.
  • Don’t leave sugary drinks or food uncovered during outdoor gatherings.
  • Never attempt to remove an active wasp nest on your own — call a professional.

🪵 Termites — Activity Level: MEDIUM

Subterranean termite swarm season peaks in spring, but June still brings active swarmers on warm, humid evenings here in Northern California. If you notice winged termites (swarmers) around your windows or doors, or discarded wings on windowsills, that’s a red flag worth taking seriously. Termite damage is silent and expensive — the average repair cost runs into the thousands.

Prevention Tips

  • Fix leaking faucets and irrigation lines near your foundation immediately.
  • Keep mulch at least 6 inches away from your home’s foundation.
  • Store lumber, cardboard, and wood debris away from the structure.
  • Schedule an annual termite inspection — early detection is everything.
