Yuba City Bug Barometer: May 2026 Pest Activity Report
Welcome to Green Bones Pest Control’s monthly Bug Barometer — your local guide to what’s crawling, flying, and nesting around Yuba City and the greater Sacramento Valley this time of year. May is one of our busiest months, and honestly, it’s no surprise. After a wet winter and a warm spring, pest populations are exploding across Yuba County. Owner Matt has been out in the field for 25+ years, and he’ll tell you the same thing every May: if you’re not thinking about pest prevention right now, the pests already have a head start on you.
Let’s break down what we’re seeing out there.
Current Pest Activity Levels — May 2026
🐜 Ants — Activity Level: HIGH
Argentine ants and pavement ants are absolutely surging right now. May brings the warm, dry stretch after spring rains, which drives ants indoors in search of water and food. We’re getting calls about ant trails in kitchens, bathrooms, and along baseboards all over Yuba City and Marysville.
- Seal cracks and gaps around windows, doors, and utility entry points
- Keep food stored in airtight containers and wipe down counters regularly
- Fix any leaky faucets or pipes — ants are drawn to moisture
- Trim back shrubs and trees touching your home’s exterior
🕷️ Spiders — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Spider activity is picking up as their food supply — other insects — becomes more abundant. We’re seeing black widows in garages, sheds, and outdoor storage areas throughout the Sacramento Valley. Western spotted orb weavers are also starting to build webs around porch lights and eaves. Medium now, but trending toward HIGH as summer approaches.
- Shake out shoes and gloves before putting them on, especially in garages
- Reduce clutter in storage areas where black widows love to hide
- Replace standard outdoor bulbs with yellow “bug lights” that attract fewer insects (and therefore fewer spiders)
- Knock down webs regularly around your home’s exterior
🦟 Mosquitoes — Activity Level: HIGH
With the Feather River and surrounding irrigation channels running strong through Yuba County, standing water is everywhere right now. Mosquito pressure is high this May and expected to climb. The Sutter-Yuba Mosquito and Vector Control District is active, but backyard breeding sources are often overlooked.
- Empty any standing water weekly — bird baths, flower pot saucers, buckets, tarps
- Clean out gutters so water drains properly
- Use mosquito dunks in ornamental ponds or water features
- Keep grass and weeds trimmed short — mosquitoes rest in dense vegetation
🐭 Rodents — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Roof rats and house mice activity is moderate in May. As outdoor food sources become more available, rodents tend to range further — but homes with easy access points remain targets year-round. We’ve been finding evidence in attics and crawl spaces regularly. Don’t wait for chewing sounds in the walls to take action.
- Inspect your roofline and eaves for gaps larger than a quarter-inch
- Store birdseed, pet food, and bulk dry goods in sealed metal or hard plastic containers
- Keep firewood stacked away from your home’s foundation
- Check door sweeps and garage seals for wear
🐝 Wasps & Yellow Jackets — Activity Level: HIGH
Paper wasps and yellow jackets are building new nests right now, and May is the ideal time to catch them early while colonies are still small. We’re finding nests under eaves, in fence rails, behind shutters, and in attic vents all around Yuba City. A nest that’s the size of a golf ball today will be the size of a basketball by August.
- Inspect your eaves, porch ceilings, and fence lines every couple of weeks
- Cover outdoor trash cans with tight-fitting lids
- Don’t leave sugary drinks or food sitting outside unattended
- Never attempt to remove an established nest on your own — call a professional
🪲 Termites — Activity Level: MEDIUM
Subterranean termite swarm season typically peaks April through June here in the Sacramento Valley, so we’re right in the middle of it. If you’ve seen winged insects (swarmers) near windowsills or mud tubes along your foundation, don’t ignore it. Termite damage is slow but devastating, and Northern California homes with wood-to-soil contact are especially vulnerable.
- Fix moisture issues around your foundation — termites are attracted to damp wood
- Keep mulch and wood debris away from your home’s perimeter
- Schedule a professional termite inspection if you haven’t had one recently
- Know the difference between termite swarmers and flying ants (we can help identify them)
