Yuba City Bug Barometer: May 2026 Pest Report

Yuba City Bug Barometer — May 2026

Welcome to the Green Bones Pest Control Bug Barometer — your monthly snapshot of what’s crawling, flying, and burrowing around Yuba City and the greater Sacramento Valley right now. May is one of the most active months of the year for pests here in Northern California. Temperatures are climbing, the soil is warming up after spring rains, and just about everything with six or eight legs is ready to make its move.

Owner Matt has been tracking pest activity in Yuba County for over 25 years, and every May tells a familiar story: if you’re not getting ahead of pest pressure this month, you’ll be playing catch-up all summer. Here’s exactly what we’re seeing out in the field right now.

Ant Activity — 🔴 HIGH

No surprise here — ants are absolutely surging right now. Argentine ants, pavement ants, and odorous house ants are on a full-scale search for food and moisture as the ground dries out between rain events. We’re getting calls daily from Yuba City neighborhoods about trails running straight into kitchens, bathrooms, and garages.

Prevention Tips

  • Seal cracks around windows, doors, and your foundation — even tiny gaps are an open invitation.
  • Keep pet food in sealed containers and clean up crumbs and spills promptly.
  • Trim tree branches and shrubs that touch your home’s exterior — ants use them as highways.
  • Fix any dripping faucets or moisture issues under sinks. Ants follow water sources.

Spider Activity — 🟡 MEDIUM

Spiders are ramping up but haven’t hit their summer peak yet. We’re seeing increased activity from common house spiders and cellar spiders in garages, sheds, and crawl spaces across the Yuba City area. Keep an eye out — black widows start becoming more visible this time of year, especially in woodpiles and undisturbed corners of garages.

Prevention Tips

  • Shake out shoes, gloves, and stored clothing before putting them on — especially if items have been sitting in the garage.
  • Reduce outdoor lighting near entry points; lights attract insects, and spiders follow the food.
  • Declutter garages and storage areas to eliminate dark, undisturbed harborage spots.

Mosquito Activity — 🟡 MEDIUM (Trending Higher)

With the Feather River bottomlands and standing water from recent rains, mosquitoes in Yuba County are already making their presence known. We expect this to jump to HIGH by late May. The Sacramento Valley’s warm nights and irrigated landscapes create prime breeding conditions.

Prevention Tips

  • Dump and refresh any standing water in buckets, birdbaths, planters, and gutters every 5–7 days.
  • Check for low spots in your yard that collect water after irrigation.
  • Consider mosquito dunks for ornamental ponds or water features.

Rodent Activity — 🟡 MEDIUM

Roof rats and house mice stay active year-round in Northern California, but May brings a shift. As vegetation dries out in surrounding fields and orchards, rodents start looking toward structures for reliable food and shelter. Agricultural areas around Yuba City mean this is always a concern worth staying ahead of.

Prevention Tips

  • Inspect your roofline, eaves, and vents for gaps larger than a quarter-inch.
  • Keep firewood stored away from the house and off the ground.
  • Don’t leave fallen fruit or birdseed on the ground — it’s a buffet for rodents.

Wasp & Yellow Jacket Activity — 🟡 MEDIUM (Rising Fast)

Queen wasps spent the winter in hibernation and are now actively building new nests. May is actually the best time to deal with wasp nests — they’re small and colonies are minimal right now. By July, those same nests can house thousands of aggressive workers. We’re already finding paper wasp nests under eaves and in attic vents throughout Yuba City.

Prevention Tips

  • Do a walkaround of your eaves, porch ceilings, and fence posts every couple of weeks.
  • Seal openings in siding and around attic vents before nests get established.
  • Never attempt to remove an active nest on your own — call a pro.

Termite Activity — 🔴 HIGH

May is peak swarming season for subterranean termites in the Sacramento Valley. Swarmers — the winged reproductives — are taking flight on warm afternoons to establish new colonies. If you’re seeing small, winged insects near your windowsills or light fixtures, don’t ignore it. Termite damage in Yuba County homes is far more common than most homeowners realize.

Prevention Tips

  • Eliminate wood-to-soil contact around your foundation — stack firewood, lumber, and debris away from the house.
  • Fix leaky pipes and poor drainage; moisture is termite fuel.
  • Schedule a professional inspection — termite damage is invisible until it’s serious.

Bottom Line for Yuba City Homeowners This May

May 2026 is shaping up to be a busy pest season across Yuba County and the Sacramento Valley. The combination of warm temperatures, lingering soil moisture, and surrounding agricultural land means the pest pressure on local homes is real. The good news?
